Current Summer Beauty Trends

Summer is officially here my friends and what better way to ring in the new season than to talk excessively about makeup. Here’s a quick roundup of my top picks for current summer beauty trends to check out.

Lip Gloss/Oil

It’s an exciting time guys, the reigning matte empire that has taken over the past few years is finally coming to an end. Hallelujah. Everything glossy and dewy is in and I am *SO* excited. A quick walk through any beauty store or scroll through Instagram will show that lip gloss and lip oils are now the new girl in town. Or rather, they’re back to claim their former throne from the early 2000’s. Colourpop has revamped the traditional squeezy tube gloss that we all knew and loved, giving us a fun little throw back to middle school. These glosses have an added benefit of being plumping. They have a minty scent that surprisingly doesn’t bother me that much (not a fan of mint.) They are fairly sticky, so sticky that once the color fades you still feel the stick. That personally doesn’t bother me too much, but something to be aware of if that’s a possible deal breaker for you.

If you’re looking for a more simple take on gloss then check out Glossier’s clear gloss. It leaves the lips looking like actual glass; it isn’t sticky, has a really pleasant, subtle scent, and the packaging alone looks cute af. Also can’t forget Fenty Beauty’s Gloss Bombs that were behind reigniting my own love for glosses. Their newest shade, FU$$Y, is a gorg pink shade, but Fenty Glow is still top dog in my eyes.

Lip Oils are also making a really heavy appearance in stores. Brands from drug store to high end have been coming out with their own lip oils. Lip oils will give you the same pay off as a regular gloss, but most will have the additional benefit of actually hydrating and repairing the lips. My personal favorite lip oil at the moment is by our good old friend Chapstick. The “shade” (there’s no actual color to this product, just a clear oil) in Peach Nectar smells like actual peaches and is absolutely heavenly.

Jelly Products

Jelly Makeup first came to my attention when Farsali launched their Jelly Beam Highlight. Since then, many brands have jumped on this trend and have come out with their own versions of this funky textured makeup. Elf has a cheaper alternative to this highlight that is actually super nice. I have the shade Bubbly and it gives an intense highlight while also being somewhat natural because of its wet formula that melts to the skin. Wet n Wild also has jelly highlighters and primers, as well as eyeshadows. I’ve tried their eyeshadow in the shade Wedding Season. It was fun to use while it lasted, but unfortunately dried out in only a few short months, a huge downside to these jelly type products. Colourpop’s Jelly Much shadows are another alternative. With nearly 30 shades to chose from, you can always count on Colourpop to not only be on trend, but also offer the most color options.

If you’re looking for a more serious hit of glitter then maybe check out Glossier’s Glitter Gelée. I’ve personally never tried them, but can’t deny they look like a lot of fun. I’ve heard that they will soon be switching to biodegradable glitter and I really hope this is true. I was very surprised that a brand like Glossier, who’s target audience are millennials (aka the most environmentally conscious generation yet), didn’t originally make this product with biodegradable glitter.

I never saw myself using jelly products since they seemed more of a gimmick than anything else, but I have to say, they’re pretty fun! We’ve all used powder, creams, liquids, but jelly is something totally new that I think brings out a kid like excitement. If you’re looking for something new then I’d try this trend out. Be aware of possible drying, but if you’re willing to look past that, there are now so many options out there from various brands. You can definitely find something that works for you!

Colorful Eyeliner

Much like the previous two trends, colorful eyeliner brings out a child like excitement. I mean who didn’t love coloring as a kid and now you get to color on your face? Sign me up. As always, Colourpop is the one to go to if you are looking for basically every color of the rainbow. I currently own the shades Puppy (orange), Teaspoon (green), and Brew Haha (brownish black.) These are SUPER creamy and easily glide on which I love. Wear time in the waterline is pretty good. It’s still there after a few hours, however, it does migrate down to the lower lash line. I’ve also used them as a lid liner and it does fade quicker that way. Wear time isn’t spectacular, but can’t beat the shade selection and price.

Glossier also launched their Colorslide eyeliners that fall under the Glossier Play umbrella. They came out with some really interesting shades that you don’t see everyday, but also have more everyday shades available. I currently only own the shade Nectar (mustard yellow) and she is a beauty. It’s a drier formula and does tug a bit when using. Good ole NYX also has many color options if you don’t feel like ordering online and waiting impatiently for it to arrive.

Have any other summer beauty trends you think are going to be the talk of the town all summer long? Let me know in the comments below! As you can tell, I have no self control and I want to try EVERYTHING.
