Thrift shopping is an experience quite unlike anything else when it comes to shopping. There is never a guarantee that you’ll find something, but then that rush you get after accidentally stumbling upon gold completely makes you forget all the past loses. I’ve been an avid thrift shopper for years now and have gathered together some of my top tips when it comes to thrift shopping. If you’ve never been thrift shopping before or are looking for some pointers from a self named pro, definitely keep on reading.
1. Wear something simple
Many bloggers will go to thrift shops in their cutest outfits and by all means, go for it! But I’ve learned the best outfit is a simple t-shirt and leggings combo. While it might not be the absolute cutest, it definitely is practical. Many thrift stores do not have changing rooms and if they do, they are usually taken. Wearing a t and leggings allows you to quickly try on some clothes right in the middle of the aisle. Don’t worry, literally everyone does it. The simple silhouette will allow you to see the actual shape of the clothing items that you’re trying on so you can decide if it’s a good fit for you.
2. Have an idea of what you’re looking for
Thrift stores are notoriously unorganized and it’s easy to get lost in the racks and racks of clothing. It can be completely overwhelming. Not to mention looking at each and every item is time consuming and let’s be honest, boring. Before entering a store I like to think about what exactly I’m hoping to find. Is it a new jean jacket? Or maybe I’m just really into the color red right now. By having this pre planned, I know what to keep my eyes open for. It’s a lot easier to scan tons of clothes and rule out the duds when I know what I want.
3. Plan a route
Try to find thrift stores that are near each other so that you can hit up multiple in one trip. One store can be completely barren while the next can be an actual treasure trove.
4. Hit up the men’s section!!!!!
I cannot even begin to count all the times that I wasn’t able to find anything in the women’s section, but walk out of the men’s with arms full of great finds. The men’s sections always have really cool t-shirts and other oversized items that’ll give you that relaxed fit that is really in right now. This would be the place to go to if you’re looking for flannels, over sized t’s, or even a cool jacket. This tip also works in reverse! If you’re a man, then check out the lady’s section. You never know what you’ll find.
5. Bring hand sanitizer
6. Reexamine everything you’ve picked up
Before heading to the registers step to the side and examine every piece you grabbed. Really think if it’s something you’ll enjoy wearing or if you just picked it up for the deal. This is also the time to look for any stains, tears, or general weirdness in the item.
7. Try something new
If you’re open to expanding your style then take this opportunity to try out a new trend that you’ve been eyeing. Thrift stores are great because they are full of cheap and interesting pieces that really allow you to expand your comfort zone. If it doesn’t work out then there’s no harm done, you only spent a little bit on it and you can always donate it again for the next person to be bold enough to try.
Thrifting is a fun experience that gives you the ability to think beyond what is being pushed at you in every other store. No one is there to tell you what is cool or “not cool” and it’s completely liberating. It allows us to freely express ourselves and gives a second chance to some really great articles of clothing.
